KALRO Potato Breeding Program Explores New Breeding Opportunities for Kenya

Date: May 23rd, 2023

In an exciting development for Kenya’s potato industry, the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) is set to host a meeting on May 23rd, 2023. This meeting is a follow-up on the success of the East-Africa Potato Breeding Network1 which was established in April 2023 and held its inaugural meeting in Nairobi, Kenya. KALRO aims to explore new breeding opportunities and redefine the potato market segment and target product profile for the country. This event promises to bring together key stakeholders from Kenya’s potato sector in a collaborative effort to shape the future of potato breeding in the region.

KALRO is setting up an innovative Product Design Team to spearhead efforts to define the Potato Market Segment and Target Product Profiles specifically tailored to meet Kenya’s unique requirements. This will assist in aligning the breeding programs with the demands of the local market and the East-Africa network. In this pursuit, KALRO has actively engaged in partnerships and expert support. Notably, the International Potato Center (CIP) has been a crucial partner, fostering collaboration and facilitating capacity-building initiatives with the support of the Accelerated Breeding Initiative (ABI)-transform a team and Root, Tuber, and Banana (RTB) Breeding project.

The upcoming meeting at Nairobi represents an essential follow-up to the East-Africa Potato Breeding Network’s accomplishments. By actively involving key players from Kenya’s potato sector, KALRO aims to foster collaboration, gather valuable insights, and drive innovation in potato breeding in Kenya and beyond. By collaborating with partners such as CIP, KALRO is shaping the future of potato breeding and capacity building in Kenya.
