How we work
Organisation Structure
The organisation comprises the Board of Management, Directorate, Secretariat,
Institutes and Centres.
The Board of Management
The management of the organisation is vested in the Board of Management, which
oversees the effective coordination of the organisation’s operations and ensures
that the activities are consistent with government policy, objectives, and national
priorities related to agriculture and livestock research.
The Directorate
The Directorate comprises the Director General and two Deputy Directors General
(Crops and Livestock). Their role is to oversee and coordinate the implementation
of policies, plans and Board decisions in the organisation. The Directorate reports to
the Board of Management regularly on the progress, challenges and other relevant
experiences encountered while implementing planned activities.

The Secretariat is the implementing arm of the Board and is composed of the
Directorate, Technical and Corporate Departments. It is responsible for formulating
organization-wide policies, strategies, and projects and coordinating their implementation.
The Technical and Corporate Departments are headed by Directors. Technical arm of the Secretariat comprises: (i) Crop Systems; (ii) Livestock Systems; (iii) Environment and Natural Resource Management (iv) Socioeconomics and Policy Development; (v) Knowledge, Information and Outreach; (vi) Partnerships and Business Development; (vii) Planning, Performance Management and Quality Control. Research Institutes, Centres and Sub-centres
The organisation has 17 research institutes, located across the country and largely
organised along value chains and thematic areas. The institutes are responsible for
the implementation of the organisation’s research agenda through a network of 21
research centres and 34 sub-centres, covering all the agro-ecological zones in Kenya as shown in Table 2. Through this network, the organisation has a physical presence in 37 counties. However, it is important to note that these centres have mandate areas that cover more than one county, ensuring that all the 47 counties are covered in terms of appropriate technologies and innovations. The agricultural sector in the counties particularly the extension staff, will be involved in the implementation through training of trainers, innovation platforms and on-farm field activities. The research agenda is implemented through annual work plans that are approved by the Board. The research programmes are designed to incorporate cross-cutting themes that allow for inter-institute collaboration.
