Use of intracropping systems for the control of stem borer (Chilo partellus) in
Abstract
Varieties of sorghum and cowpea (resistant and susceptible variety of each) were interplanted in alternate rows in the same field in one season to manage cereal stem borers in sorghum and cowpea aphids in cowpea. Monocultures of resistant and susceptible sorghum and cowpea cultivars were evaluated against their intracrops. Intracropping enhanced pest control in both sorghum and cowpea. Significant differences (P = 0.05) were observed in both pests between resistant monoculture and in intracropping and susceptible monoculture, suggesting that resistant variants of sorghum and cowpea through associational or pseudo resistance offered some protection to the susceptible counterparts under intracropping systems. The protection was comparable to that normally realised from intercropping of both crops (sorghum and cowpea) or protection by pesticide.
