Abstract:
Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell (Salviniacege) is an aquatic moss-like floating weed which is becoming a threat to all activities in Lake Naivasha. Although mechanical, chemical and biological control measures have been suggested, less attention has been paid to the possible utilisation rather than destruction of the weed. Various uses of aquatic weeds have been documented. Of percent, great interest has been shown in commercial processing of aquatic weeds into animal feed. Salvinia molesta was analysed and the preliminary result indicated that it has low fibre content and high protein, mineral and energy content. It can be used as a supplement in animal feed.
