Abstract:
The efficiency of seven herbicides against weeds in a Rosecoco (C.V.K.74) bean stand was compared to clean hand weeding, two hand weeding and no weeding in an experiment conducted at Embu Research Station. The herbicides were applied in 400 litres water/ha with pre-planting treatments being applied a day before planting and the pre-emergence treatments being applied a day after planting. Reasonable weed control was achieved with propachlor (2625kg/ha), Linuron/Alachlor (2360 kg/ha), penoxalin (2510 kg/ha) and EPTC + antidote (2160kg/ha) but none of the herbicide was as efficient as hand weeding (2960kg/ha) which outyielded all other treatments significantly. Triflunalin appeared to depress the yields (1715kg/ha). Except for propachlor weed control by all other herbicides was inadequate. Propachlor Bentazon, Linuron and Alachlor (singly or in mixture) required further investigations.
