Abstract:
A trial was laid out to compare effectiveness of hand weeding and chemical control in maize production. Randomised, complete block design with four replications was used in plots of 4.5x5m at spacing 75x50cm. There were seven treatments (5 herbicides, hand weeding and a weedy check) Germination checks, weed rating were recorded, and at harvest agronomic characters - usable cobs, total cobs, plant stand, and yields were determined for each treatment. Hand weeding gave highest yields of maize. Other high yields were obtained from Gramoxone, Lasso-Atrazine + Gramoxone, Primagram and Atrazine in that order. Hand weeding, however is labour intensive unlike the other weed control methods where minimum labour is required.
