Guidelines for Reducing Contaminants In Raw Cattle Milk

You are here: Home / Guidelines for Reducing Contaminants In Raw Cattle Milk

The USAID Feed the Future (FtF) Initiative draws from the ideals of the Global Hunger and Food Security Initiative. The FtF strategy underpins recent commitments in the region as articulated in the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP), to which the Kenya Government is committed, with a view to addressing agricultural and nutritional insecurity through improved agricultural productivity. To contribute to addressing the challenges, the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mooted the Integrated Agricultural Research for Development (IARD) Project under the USAID Feed the Future initiative. KALRO implemented the project in selected disadvantaged target regions of Kenya. In the dairy value chain, one of the milestones was to determine the residues and contaminants occurring in milk and formulate measures to control their occurrence for improved health and productivity of the animals and humans.

These guidelines give an overview of the magnitude of the problem and the strategies that need to be put in place to control the hazard of residues and contaminants occurring in milk along the dairy value chain. The design and format of the guidelines take into consideration the target audiences and their roles in the dairy value chain for maximum impact. This manual is intended for use by extension staff, farmers, and traders in the dairy industry. The adoption and use of these guidelines are expected to contribute to increased productivity, health, and profitability for improved incomes.
