KALRO Upscales Maize Value Chain in Uasin Gishu and Tana River Counties
In a recent workshop, 40 trainees who included lead farmers, extension officers, and other maize value chain actors from Tana River and Uasin Gishu Counties received mentorship and training from KALRO scientists
on the maize value chain. The training covered 14 “all-around” modules on maize production, climate change, and climate-smart agriculture, pests and diseases, processing, food safety, new improved varieties, and formal and informal seed systems. The training also covered post-harvest losses, valued addition, and marketing.
The trainees had the opportunity to visit the MLN screening unit at DRI Naivasha. They hailed the selfless efforts by KALRO, CIMMYT, and other NARS together with seed companies for ensuring that farmers accessed disease-free maize varieties after seeing artificially inoculated Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus, Sugar cane Mosaic Virus and MLN in the field.
