Industrial Crops Research Institute Centre - Mtwapa (ICRI Mtwapa) is situated 20 km north of Mombasa in Kilifi County, in coastal lowland zone three (CL3, coconut-cassava zone), which receives an annual average rainfall of 1273 mm. It is the headquarters for the Industrial Crops Research Institute and has the mandate to address agricultural constraints on coconut, cashew, sisal and bixa productivity specific to the agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions of coastal lowland Kenya. The Centre also has an adaptive research mandate for three counties; Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River.
