Katumani experiences a semi-arid tropical climate described as agroecological zone IV, with a bi-modal pattern of rainfall. The first rains, traditionally known as the long rains, are in March to May, with the peak in April. After the long rains is a dry period to mid-October when the second season (known as the short rains) commences. The short rains season has its peak in November, and begins to taper off towards mid December. The mean annual rainfall at Katumani is 655 mm. The average seasonal rainfall for the long rains is 272 mm while that for the short rains is 382 mm. Both the seasonal and the annual rainfall totals exhibit wide variation. The mean maximum temperatures at the Centre are 24.7ºC and minimum are 13.7ºC consistently.
