Improving the Lives of Communities in ASALs through Indigenous Chicken Production and Marketing

Short description of the project:
This project aims  at improving the lives of communities living in arid and semi-arid lands through indigneous chicken production and marketing.  The main thrust will be to enhance efficiency along the indigenous chicken production and marketing value chains.  This will be done through packaging and disseminating existing technologies developed in previous research efforts. Using a buisness approach the project will train indigneous chicken service providers who will in turn offer services to common interest groups on various aspects of poultry management while linking them to organised markets. In addition the service providers will vaccinate poultry against diseases such as Newcastle which is a major constraint under free range production systems. Ultimately this will enhance food security, increase household incomes translating into improved livelihoods of resource poor farmers especially women and children

Increased poultry production and market access will translate to higher incomes for households especially those of  poor resource indigenous chicken farmers  majority of  whom are  women and children. Local chicken traders will also benefit as a result of increased demand  of indigneous chicken products  due to quality assurance from producers thus increased profitability and market stability.  Processors will also capitailse on  emerging buisness opportinities in value addition while poultry breeders will have more buisness due to increased demand for quality breeding stock.  Research institutions will analyse constraints along the indigneous poultry value chains and repackage appropriate technologies for dissemination by extension agents.  This will improve collaboration and linakges along the value chain.  Lessons learnt will be documented to ensure future projects are effective.
