The Dairy research Institute has its headquarters at KALRO Naivasha. The centre prides in hosting the National Sahiwal Stud. The Sahiwal is a dual purpose animal that is suitable in marginal areas for production of milk and meat. Technologies developed with partners at KALRO Naivasha include zero grazing and associated napier technologies, intensive dairy production, calf rearing and housing. Other studies enabled shift from large scale to small scale dairy farming, dual purpose Sahiwal, dairy goat breeding, dairy cattle breeding and fertility studies. Similarly, ethno-veterinary studies, model dairy farm and economics of dairy production, manure studies, fodder trees, legume studies and forage conservation have historic roots in Naivasha.
