SUCCESS STORY-BEATRICE MUNYOKI

Beatrice Munyoki is the Coordinator of Mbitini Muungano Support group and she comes from Ikotamwithe. Beatrice suffers from high blood pressure disorder.  She is one of the great beneficiaries of the amaranth project both economically and health wise. Consumption of amaranth has reduced her hypertension.

Beatrice Munyoki was growing crops which in most cases fail as a result of low rainfall. These crops were not benefiting her economically but when she started growing amaranth, her life changed both economically and health wise.  Amaranth being a drought resistant crop matures early and does not require a lot of rainfall. Therefore Beatrice uses vegetable as well as amaranth grains and this has helped her greatly in reduction of high blood pressure.
Similarly Beatrice Munyoki benefited economically and she was able to sell over 100kgs of amaranth grains and pay school fees for her grandchildren who are orphans. Beatrice said that,
“Kuma nambiiya Kutumia Mchicha thina wa kwambatwa ni nzakame withitwe wi mutheeu na ndikwiwa undu nineewa vau tene”.

“Since I started consuming amaranth, my blood pressure has reduced greatly and I am not feeling as before”.

Economic wise Beatrice Munyoki has been selling amaranth grains where she gets income and pay school fees for her grandchildren who are orphans. She recalls, ” Nithiitwe ngithoosya mbeu sya Mchicha ngikwata mbesa vala niiviaa esukuwa fees ala ni syana ndiwa nikalaa nasyo”.

SUCCESS STORY OF MICHAEL KYANGANGU
Michael Kyangangu has been a farmer in Mbitini. He has been growing crops which in most cases fail due to shortage of rainfall. Therefore Michael was experiencing great losses as a result of massive crop failure. Since amaranth is a drought resistant crop Michael was able to harvest over 300kgs which he sold and pay school fees for his son. Other crops which he used to grow were failing because they require a lot of rainfall and therefore he used to have nothing to sell.

Michael Kyangangu recalls,
