In 1989 the centre was made a fully-fledged Regional Research Centre under KARI. The centre’s mandate is adaptive research aimed improving farming systems in the counties of Baringo, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Samburu, Turkana and Laikipia. More than 80% of the mandate area is ASAL and therefore the centre focuses on adaptive through development of intervention strategies in crops, livestock, NRM and cross cutting systems to ensure food security, improved household income, and sustained environment.
